YAG capsulotomy is a laser procedure used to treat posterior capsule opacification (PCO), or clouding of the lens capsule, which can occur after cataract surgery.
The laser creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule to allow light to pass through to the retina, restoring clear vision. This is a quick, common, and painless outpatient treatment that helps improve blurry vision, glare, and other symptoms that may develop months or years after cataract surgery.
Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) can occur after cataract and RLE surgery due to a proliferation of residual lens epithelial cells (LECs) after the natural lens has been removed. These cells can migrate and multiply on the back of the lens capsule, creating a cloudy film that can blur vision.
Symptoms of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery include blurry or cloudy vision, glare or halos around lights, and increased sensitivity to light. Patients may begin to find it difficult to read or see fine details, and notice a loss of colour or double vision in the affected eye. The symptoms are often similar to the original cataract and may develop gradually, months or years after surgery.
The procedure is painless, requiring no stitches or incisions and serious complications are rare.
The standard treatment for PCO is a painless, non-invasive procedure called a YAG laser capsulotomy.
This procedure uses a laser to create a small opening in the cloudy capsule behind the artificial lens, allowing light to pass through and restore clear vision.
The process is quick and most people can return to their daily activities shortly after, although vision may be blurry for several hours until the pupil dilating drops wear off.
